Mt Yarrowyck Location Scouting
14/09/25
As the cool weather leaves us behind, it’s time to start getting back out with the camera. Mount Yarrowyck is a location I still need to spend more time exploring; both times I’ve been there, I’ve run out of light before reaching the end of the trail.
This time, I was scouting the area with Evelyn from Peacock Photography. We’d hoped it might work well as a location for fine art nudes, but our spirits were a little dampened on arrival, the ground was far boggier than expected. It’s been weeks since the last significant rain, but I suppose the granite mountains are still slowly seeping. Many of the less interesting spots were fine, but all the best areas were either inaccessible or messy. The split rock with the dead tree beside it is a location I’m particularly excited about, but the ground around it was so swampy we couldn’t reach it. Still, there was plenty of scenery and texture to enjoy, and the sunset was spectacular.
Not all was lost.
I only managed to get one test photo of Evelyn, right before we turned back to make it to the car before dark. We’d reached a small archway of native shrubs that created an incredibly dark path forward, Evelyn’s skin popped beautifully against the shadows. I would’ve loved to have caught a bit of sunlight on the entrance to really make her stand out, but we made the most of the light we had. It’s definitely made me curious about what lies further up the trail.
Part of the reason we didn’t get as far as planned was because we were both captivated by the dramatic shadows cast along a vast rock wall. The lighting was perfect, and I spent a good ten to fifteen minutes modelling for Evelyn. It was a bit directionless, no planned poses, just a matter of playing with the contrast of light and shadow in the moment.
I’m not sure when we’ll get back to this location, but with daylight savings now in effect, there’s more light and more time to work with. Mount Yarrowyck clearly has a lot more to offer, and I can’t wait to see what that might be.
