One of the best things about working in event coverage is the sheer number of experiences you get to enjoy that you might not have had otherwise. Case in point: Minerama in Glen Innes. I’m generally not someone with much interest or knowledge when it comes to gemstones, or stones in general, outside of maybe fossils, so it’s not the kind of event I would normally drive an hour to attend.
But when you’re invited to shoot media for something like this, it puts a whole new spin on it. I spent a solid four or five hours at the showgrounds talking to people (maybe a little too much), taking photos, and soaking it all in. While I obviously came away with a tonne of images, I also left with a heap of knowledge and a newfound respect for the artisans and what they do. Hopefully I get invited back again next year.
