Portraits at Thunderbolts Cave
02/05/26
After a massive day of shooting at the Australian Celtic Festival, Evelyn of Peacock Photography and I decided we needed a little peace and quiet to wind down before heading home and backing up the 5,000 photos we collectively captured.
Thunderbolts Cave is a really cool little location not far from Guyra—we first checked it out on our drive home from shooting the Glen Innes Races earlier in the year, though we didn’t take any photos on that occasion. This time, with the sun hanging low, I wanted to try and capture a small handful of portraits as a bit of a test in the location.
I also discovered a large hole in the top of the cave looking directly down into it, and I thought it would be a shame not to at least try to do something with it. In the end, aside from the first image, I’m not sure I came away with anything I really love, but I know it’s a location I want to revisit—maybe with different lenses and a bit more room to experiment.
We definitely left feeling more relaxed than when we arrived, and I think that has to count for something.
