One Last Trip To Toowoomba

With me starting a new work position in November, I was booked in for one final week of shooting for Living Entertainment up in Toowoomba. While the videos I shot up there are still a little way off in terms of production, I did try to get out a bit to do some photography.
The reality is, I didn’t manage to capture all that much during my five-day stint in QLD, only getting out to take photos a couple of times, and neither outing really produced anything that stood out to me as particularly interesting. That said, I did really like the shot of a traffic cone just sitting in a patch of clover that I captured on my first morning’s expedition. There was something so surreal about the whole scene: the cone was on the far side of a tall construction fence, but any actual construction had long since finished, and the clover had come to reclaim the space while the morning light hit it just right. A weird photo to fall in love with, I know, but I suppose art is like that sometimes.

On the second day, I decided it was time to invest in a red filter for my 24mm prime. For those not in the know, red filters make blue and green tones appear much darker when shooting in black and white. It was a fairly common practice in the days of film, but less so now that everything is digital, mainly because the way colour wavelengths interact with a digital sensor is quite different to the chemical process of film. That said, it did a great job of darkening the skies, something that’s immediately noticeable in the first image of the cathedral.
I wish I could say I captured more, but this is pretty much all she wrote. I did, however, continue experimenting with the red filter over the following weeks. Spoiler: it works a lot better in the middle of the day than it does in the early morning, but that’s a story for another time.
