Red Filter Experiments at Mother of Ducks Lagoon

26/09/25

During the drive home from my trip to Toowoomba (mentioned in my last blog post), I pulled into Mother of Ducks Lagoon in Guyra, a location I’ve been curious about for years but had never actually taken the time to check out. It was about 3 p.m., the sun was still high, and I thought it would be the perfect time to test out the red filter I’d purchased during my work trip. I think the results speak for themselves.

Time of day is everything when shooting with a red filter, and the way it makes the clouds appear so dynamic against the darkened sky is something I really love. There’s a mood to these images that’s hard to describe but incredibly effective. The location itself is pretty impressive too, a vast wetland with a golf course running down one side. I expected the lagoon to be decent in size, but its true scale genuinely caught me off guard. I’d love to make my way back there for a sunset shoot sometime soon.

I never expected this…

An image captured while I was simply out experimenting that I might actually want to feature in my portfolio? Inconceivable! But I really do love everything about this shot, from the angry-looking sky, to the front lighting on the gazebo, to the slightly out-of-focus grass in the foreground with the barbed vines on the right. I don’t know… this absolutely looks like my kind of photo, and I hope I can take more like it in the future.
