Soul Silver Party Project
With a whole host of animated projects kicking off later this month and into June, it was time for me to start relearning how to draw—something I did daily for most of my life before photography and video slowly took over in recent years. I wish I could say drawing is like riding a bike, something you never really forget, but that’s not quite how things have played out.
I wanted to start with a small project, so I decided to create a series of playing-card-style illustrations based on my most recent playthrough of Pokémon SoulSilver, highlighting the party I used to complete the game. The drawing and rendering styles are a mix of my current design sensibilities, while the rendering itself pulls heavily from animation work I was doing 10 to 15 years ago—an aesthetic I’ll also be revisiting for at least one major upcoming animation piece.
I think the two styles work quite well together, at least with something cute like Pokémon. I already have my next drawing series sketched out: an unofficial bestiary inspired by the 1996 title Quake. How this rendering style translates to something much grittier, though, remains to be seen.
